I didn't want to be away from my daughters & family, but i had to raise my 2 girls when their dad left because he couldn't handle a handicap daughter or the responsibilities that went with the marriage,. so, i met a man that was a owner, who had several trucks. I started to worked in his office & then one day he fired all drivers and kept 2 trucks. he taught me how to haul oversize & flatbed.loads. It was hard at first, because the cab over (kw) had center point steering & you had to move the truck to turn the wheel. It took a few weeks(12) to learn just the basics & then i went by myself. i learned how to haul steel & equipment . i have been in trucking going on 27 years & i have hauled everything from equipment, steel, building supplies, dry loads & refer loads , so i can say the changes are great for more women to join the women who are out here. it is a good experience.
now when it comes to the truck stops, there has bee so many changes there. we didn't have women shower rooms & co-ed showers , didn't exist like they do now, many women had to use shower rooms with their husbands (husbands would make sure there wasn't anyone using the restrooms, because you had to walk through to get to the showers) and then there was the showers on the Ohio turnpike.
when it came to the steel factories & other companies that didn't have women working there you had to use the mens bathroom-locker rooms.now that there are more women in the workforce, that has also changed for the better.
I plan to stay in trucking as long as i can before I decide to retire
